Beef 2018

BEEF AUSTRALIA 2018

We were thrilled to take out a place at the Ruralco Commercial Cattle Competition at this year’s Beef Australia 2018. Boogal Cattle Co took out 3rd Prize in the EU Steer class with a pen of our purebred grey Brahman steers.

WEANING 2020

Here at Boogalgopal, we began our weaning in early May and are happy to report that despite the lack of  a good season in our part of the Burnett, the cows did a superb job on the weaners and all are back and settled in their new paddocks.

The breeders have settled down well also and hopefully the paddocks will receive some rain before they are due to start calving in late Winter/September. With only 10 inches rolling rainfall (May to May), the season has not been the brightest in the breeder paddocks although some decent rain certainly fell in other parts of the property in March.

The Covid 19  crisis has affected us all, but we are thankful that our day to day life has continued much as normal and the usual daily running of the property has kept us quite isolated !

Our grass reared bulls will be ready as usual for sale direct from the property ( at our Glenleigh Bull Depot) and already we have had many interested parties inspecting our current crop of weaners  and breeders. The bulls will be tested this week and soon after will be available for inspection.

We look forward to welcoming visitors over the coming bull selling season.

Processing weaners.

All weaners are weighed with tissue samples (TSU) taken from the stud weaners to establish the genetic potential of the animal at an earlier age. Selection on the phenotype of the animal, along with the DNA results obtained, work together to help make more accurate breeding decisions.

After a week in the yards, all commercial steers and heifers are walked back to new paddocks……

…………while the  Boogal Stud group are walked back to the home yards where  a few more days of assessment is carried out.

Arriving at the Home Yards

Additional pressure is placed on the weaners  in the round yard to assess temperament and check paper work etc

Good temperament is a prime consideration throughout our herd and the weaners love and crave the attention !

The grandkids are always happy to talk to the weaners !

Weaners are then walked to their new fresh, spelled paddocks where they will grow out until ready to offer as working bulls.

Meanwhile as we head in to winter , we have been treated to some glorious day, some magnificent skies and sunsets, along with some freezing cold days!

2020 thus far………from Brown to Green !

It was a really dry start to the year 2020 here at BOOGAL CATTLE. The dry conditions carried on from a dry Spring and Summer in 2019. A  fall of 20 mms on Christmas Day 2019 gave us some breathing space and since that time we have received ‘adequate’  falls of rain to see us through for a while.

Although we have not been lucky enough to be under any really big rain clouds, the 98mms we have received to mid March, through an accumulation of small falls, has seen the country respond reasonably well.  We were extremely thankful to see much bigger totals over at our ‘Glenleigh Bull Depot ‘( just 10 minutes over the range !!) ….and so our ‘up and coming’ grass- reared bulls are looking in great form and will be ready for inspection in a few months.

A short series of photos below touching briefly on our happenings at ‘Boogalgopal’ over the past few months.

Dusty end to a day’s mustering at the home yards.

Still dusty at the Main Yards as we yard a paddock of stud breeders.

Paddocks may have been a bit challenged but calves at branding were still pretty impressive

A welcome drop of rain in  mid February

A few wet days saw some construction  down in the shed …. extra dog pens

New water schemes have been undertaken with the laying of 4 more kilometres of poly pipe to new troughs and tanks .

Ongoing chores such as fencing and  mustering continue

Meanwhile, the grass has bulked up and greened up …. bulls at Glenleigh

Stunning skies in the uncertain showery weather

and the young bull calves are in full bloom early March

We may not have managed the big rainfall totals but ‘hope springs eternal’ for the remaining few months before winter. Run-off inducing rain would be great to fill a few dams but with good underground water, things are still looking good. The colourful sunsets have been something to see!

We look forward to weaning in April and also to welcoming clients to inspect this years bulls.

2019 BULL SELLING SEASON

Early  clients have already  been arriving at our Glenleigh Bull Depot to select their 100% GRASSFED pasture -reared  Boogal Brahman and Charbray bulls; but, with what we consider a really worthy mob of  100 young 2 year bulls, there are many more brilliant ‘boys’ out there to take home to your ‘girls’

We have many polled bulls available. Bulls available for sale at the moment have also been semen tested , vaccinated for 3 Day and Lepto and all are fully guaranteed. Our buyers  like to avoid the stress of the saleyard auction system and can purchase the bull of their choice without the frustrating competition from other buyers.

Our breeding, as always, is focussed on  female fertility and traceability throughout the generations. Cows are preg tested each year with cows not able to return in calf being  culled.  Docility is also a prerequisite.

Our herd retains a JBas 7 rating and as well as this, yearly faecal sampling and testing is done to allow us to sell bulls into Western Australia. The quiet temperament of our bulls is well recognized and makes them highly sought after. Although the majority of our bulls are stud registered, our focus is on the commercial attributes desired by our clients, and, as we use many of our own bulls in the commercial paddocks, we are able to testify to their fertility and ability to produce , not just the right article for the meatworks, but many Champion carcase ribbons as well.

We cater for single or bulk orders

2019 WEANING

Despite a very dry start to 2019 where we received no rain in January  and a lucky 110 mms in February/ March, we were extremely pleased with the quality of our weaners….both stud and commercial. We have recorded no more rain in April, May and June and as expected , the outlook is definitely not as we would like !! However, weaning weights have been excellent and both Charbray and Brahman weaner bulls and heifers are looking a treat.

Mustering in a paddock of greys

Charbray  breeders being mustered

Weaners  almost as big as their mothers

Paddock of grey breeders ready to draft off weaners

Drafting

With weaners all drafted off, and mothers back in their paddocks, weaners are weighed,  and kept in the yards for a week or so  before being taken to new paddocks

Commercial heifers being driven up the creek to their new home

Weaner steers heading out

Stud weaners are brought to the home yards for another week so that further assessment can be made, records verified and temperament assessed.

Once at the home yards, weaners are put under closer pressure to test for temperament before being let out in to a small paddock each day.

Once happy with the group, weaners are let out for the final time and droved over to a scrub paddock where the young bulls will grow up on grass pastures only …. ready for sale the following year.

Meanwhile, the cows are enjoying a ‘calf-free  sunset’ back in the paddock!

Cheers for now !
