Summer Update 2014/15
The change in the outlook for our Summer season has been nothing short of amazing.
We have gone from reducing numbers every few weeks and supplementing breeders with molasses to receiving 8 inches of rain in December and enjoying the resultant growth in the pasture.
The bulls are now all out with the breeders and the calves are showing the bloom that can only come from well contented cows.
We can only hope that the rain that we have been lucky enough to receive will soon spread across the whole state.
Below are a few images captured over the month of December
By December , the majority of our calves were on the ground but a few little surprise packages were popping up around the paddocks.
This calf was born down by the creek under the proud, protective eye of her mother
The paddocks were still dry as we yard the horses up after they ‘escaped’ from the horse paddock!
Home bred polled bull “Boogalgopal STAR PISTOL” by LMC Pistolero heads out to work with a paddock of grey stud cows.
Boogalgopal bred Herd bull up in the commercial paddocks striding along with purpose
Before the rain, new sire ” Glengarry Absolute “
(acquired at this year’s Rockhampton Brahman Week Sales ) is looking good and working the mob
“Jaffra Soda” on the job
New Charolais sire Palgrove Harry- purchased at this year’s on property Palgrove sale
………happily smooching with his mob of heifers in his role as “Clean-up” bull for our AI mob
Charolais Sire ,”Granville English”, out in the paddock
Despite the dry , we decided to hop in and brand the commercial calves up at the Top Yards
………and were happy with their condition despite the less than ordinary weather conditions
Mustering along the high banks of Boogalgopal Creek
Lance and Dan up at the Top Yards
We were lucky to finish up the branding and beat a hasty retreat down the creek
………..to avoid being “bogged” in this country that needs only a few points to make it a problem !!
In early December, the storms move in …and what a difference to the eye and soul !!
A Happy Man !! Tex checks the rain gauge over at “Glenrock”
While we were receiving gentle storms and showers here at Boogalgopal,……….
over at “Stonehaven” Dan and Emma-Jane were deluged with 16 inches in 2 days
This certainly caused fencing, telephone and road problems…..
but on the upside of things, the freshly desilted dam filled up to create a very impressive waterhole
We branded the stud paddocks and managed to avoid too many delays from wet yards .
Bringing in the “Dingo Hole” Greys for branding
Another single sire mob approaches the yards
Yarding up at the Main Yards with the change in grass colour very evident
Cattle begin to stream into the yards
The branding area- yellow for stud calves….this year’s charbray ( and commercial) colour is purple.
A quick break from branding to celebrate Janelle’s birthday and have some birthday cake and watermelon !
Brahman calves are so curious and love to come up for a chat….. this intrepid mob left their mums to graze to say hello !
Grass is greening and the sky is a beautiful sultry deep blue just before dark
It has to be Summer when the Christmas Lilies bloom !
The calves are taking on a lovely bloom and looking rather beautiful in the lily patch !
Stud calves freshly branded and tagged
The paddocks just keep improving by the day
Up in the steer paddocks
Green Panic goes crazy – creating a nice green haven for lunch up in the scrub !
